Therapy for Teens and Adults near San Marino | Counselor Cristina Lugo

Finding the right therapist near San Marino can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to figure it out on your own. I offer trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and science-backed care for teens and young adults who are navigating anxiety, burnout, depression, low self-esteem and trauma. Much of the time, these challenges impact school and/or work but with the right support, you can get on track with living the life you truly want. With more than 15 years of experience, I have created a safe, inclusive space where healing and growth can truly happen.

How it works

Book an intro call

When you schedule your free consultation call, I see it as a chance to slow down and begin to develop a picture of what has been hard for you. I invite you to share what hasn’t been working or the struggles you are facing and I can share about the tools I have to help you. There is no expectation to go into the hardest parts right away. My goal is for us to begin to get a handle on what is happening and decide if we take the next step in working together or if you may benefit more from other resources I can refer you to.

Personalized, one-on-one sessions

Every person comes in with unique needs, and I never use a one-size-fits-all approach. We will create a plan that reflects where you are now and where you would like to be. As your life changes, the plan can change too. I will always check in with you so that our sessions stay aligned with what truly matters to you.

Evidence-based therapeutic techniques

In our work, I blend methods that are both evidence-based and creative. That means you will have access to tools like EMDR, parts work, expressive arts, ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and somatic tools but also space for reflection, expression, and imagination. The mix allows you to develop practical skills for anxiety, depression, or trauma while also reconnecting with your inner strength and creativity.

  • Teenage Trauma

Trauma can shape the way teens see themselves and the world around them, sometimes leaving behind feelings of fear, shame, anger, or disconnection. Whether the trauma is recent or happened years ago, healing is possible. In therapy, I support teens in safely processing difficult experiences, developing tools for emotional regulation, and rebuilding a sense of trust in themselves and others. FAQ about my counseling services

  • What is the best type of therapy for young adults and teenagers?

There is no single “best” therapy for young people. The right approach depends on their stage of life, cultural context, and emotional needs. Modalities like EMDR, ACT, mindfulness practices, and expressive arts can be very powerful, but what matters most is that the therapy feels personal and supportive, not generic.

  • Do you offer therapy in person? What about virtual? Which one is better?

I primarily work in person because I value the depth and immediacy of sitting together in the same space. That said, I also provide virtual therapy when it fits your schedule or distance. Both can be effective. If you live in San Marino or nearby, in person may help you feel more grounded.

  • Do you take insurance?

I am considered out-of-network. If you have PPO insurance, you can be reimbursed for part of your sessions. I can provide superbills each month to help you submit for reimbursement which can make therapy much more affordable to you.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

I require 24 hours’ notice to cancel without charge. If something urgent comes up, I try to reschedule within the same week. Otherwise, the full session fee applies.

  • Do you offer a sliding scale?

Yes, I am pleased to offer a robust sliding scale to support the various needs of our community. Please let me know if you have been impacted by the Eaton Fire, ICE raids or other difficult circumstances and we can find a rate that allows you to access therapy. My clients who pay my full fee make it possible for me to offer this community service so please bear that in mind when inquiring.
