Therapy for Teens and Adults near Sierra Madre | Counselor Cristina Lugo

I work with teens and young adults who are trying to manage anxiety, identity questions, or painful memories while balancing school, family, and relationships. In my practice, therapy is not about fixing you but about helping you discover how to live more connected to yourself.

How it works

Book an intro call

Our first conversation is about building trust. I want you to feel what it is like to talk freely without being judged or rushed. You decide what feels safe to share, and I will listen closely so we can begin shaping a path forward together.

Personalized, one-on-one sessions

Therapy with me is flexible and responsive. Some weeks we may focus on unpacking heavy emotions, and other weeks we may use practical tools to calm anxiety or organize your thoughts. The direction comes from you, and I adjust so you always feel supported in what matters most right now.

Evidence-based therapeutic techniques

I integrate EMDR, mindfulness, and somatic approaches with creative methods that help expression feel easier. These practices are rooted in science but also honor your individuality. Together, we combine grounded strategies with open exploration so you can build both stability and confidence.

  • Individual Therapy for Teens and Adults

When you meet with me individually, you enter a space that’s just for you where you can pause, exhale, and speak freely without judgment. Together, we might explore how anxiety or stress show up in your body, process past experiences that still affect you today, or untangle questions around identity, relationships, and life transitions. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply curious about growth, each session is designed to help you find clarity, restore balance, and feel more like yourself again.

  • EMDR Therapist

Trauma has a way of living in the background shaping thoughts, behaviors, and even physical sensations long after the original event. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-researched therapeutic approach that helps the brain reprocess these memories so they no longer hold the same emotional charge. In our work together near Sierra Madre, EMDR can be a stand-alone treatment or blended with talk therapy, depending on your needs. Whether you’re carrying a single painful event or a lifetime of stress, this approach can offer deep healing and relief.

  • Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety can be invisible to others but exhausting to live with. It can take the form of racing thoughts, chronic worry, restlessness, or physical symptoms like tension or fatigue. In therapy, we’ll create a toolkit that works specifically for you, one that may include nervous system regulation, breathwork, mindfulness, and cognitive strategies to shift anxious patterns. The goal isn’t to “get rid of” anxiety entirely, but to help you feel grounded and more in control so that it no longer dictates your day-to-day life.

  • Therapy for Teenage Depression

Depression in teens can be subtle or loud from constant irritability and withdrawal to numbness or emotional shutdown. Many teens don’t have the words to describe what they’re feeling, and that’s okay. My role is to help create a space where those feelings can be named, understood, and held with care. We explore coping skills that support emotional resilience, rebuild a sense of agency, and help teens reconnect with joy, purpose, and hope for the future.

  • Academic Burnout

For students in Sierra Madre, the pressure to succeed academically can be relentless. Burnout is more than just being tired, it's emotional exhaustion, loss of motivation, and sometimes even a sense of failure or disconnection from what once mattered. Therapy offers a space to slow down, assess what’s driving the burnout, and redefine success in a way that feels healthier and more sustainable. Together, we rebuild balance, self-worth, and a relationship to achievement that supports long-term well-being.Depression in teens can be subtle or loud from constant irritability and withdrawal to numbness or emotional shutdown. • Post-Grad Depression

Graduating from college or finishing school is often seen as an exciting achievement but for many, it marks the start of confusion, anxiety, or depression. Without the structure of school, life can feel uncertain or directionless. In therapy, we work together to unpack these feelings, explore your values, and find clarity about your next steps. Whether you're dealing with job stress, identity shifts, or just feeling lost, this is a space to make sense of it all and build a life that feels meaningful to you.

  • Teenage Trauma

Teen trauma often goes unrecognized, but it can profoundly impact how a young person relates to the world around them. In my trauma-informed work with teens, we address painful experiences with compassion, care, and the right tools. Whether it’s a recent event or something from earlier in childhood, therapy helps teens process what happened, reduce overwhelming emotions or flashbacks, and rebuild a sense of safety in their bodies, relationships, and environments. It’s not about forgetting the past; it’s about helping it lose its hold on the present.

FAQ about my counseling services

  • What is the best type of therapy for young adults and teenagers?

Therapy for teens and young adults works best when it is flexible, safe, and culturally aware. Some benefit from EMDR or mindfulness, others from expressive therapies like journaling or art. There is no single formula, the key is tailoring the process to the individual.

  • Do you offer therapy in person? What about virtual? Which one is better?

Most of my clients see me in person at my Pasadena office because I believe that connection feels stronger when we’re in the same room. Virtual sessions are still an option when distance or schedules make coming in person hard. If you live in Sierra Madre or nearby areas, you’re welcome to book an in-person session in Pasadena and enjoy a calm, private setting designed for your comfort.

  • Do you take insurance?

I do not bill insurance directly. With a PPO plan, you may qualify for partial reimbursement. I provide monthly superbills to submit to your insurance company.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel. If you cancel late and we cannot find another time that week, I do charge the full session fee.

  • Do you offer a sliding scale?

I do. My sliding scale is designed to ensure that members of our community can access therapy regardless of financial strain. If you’ve experienced challenges such as the Eaton Fire or ICE raids, please reach out. We’ll discuss a rate that feels manageable. Clients paying my standard fee make it possible to offer this reduced-rate care, so thank you for considering this when inquiring.
